HOW TO CLEAN FURNITURE

- sales

These are some tips for cleaning furniture in your house

1. Cleaning painted furniture

Clean painted furniture with a mild solution of washing-up liquid and warm water, using a small brush if necessary to get into any carved mouldings etc.

Chipped paint: Sand back around the chip to get rid of any other loose flakes of paint, and then repaint that area.

2. Cleaning leather furniture
Leather furniture can be kept looking tip-top with regular vacuuming. A wipe over with a damp cloth with remove any surface grime and you can polish up the hide with a solution of two parts linseed oil and one part vinegar - test on a hidden area first to be safe. Tougher stains will need to be tackled with a specialist cleaning product.

3. Cleaning metal furniture

Marks and stains on chrome may respond to a dab with bicarbonate of soda. Rust can be rubbed away - gently mind - with wire wool.

4. Cleaning wooden furniture
Stains and marks on wooden furniture: alcohol spots and watermarks can be removed with a cream metal polish (test on an inconspicuous area first), then faded areas can be disguised with ash or shoe polish; grease marks on unsealed wood can be sprinkled with good old talc, which you then cover with kitchen paper and press with a warm iron to absorb the grease; fill in small scratches with matching coloured wax crayon or shoe polish.
